Making The Most Of Your Period Property

Making The Most Of Your Period Property

When buying a property that isn’t a new build, many people like to search for characterful or period properties. These types of properties come with different characteristics depending on the time or period that they were built. Some of these characteristics are very desirable but over time, may be damaged or need attention as they will have deteriorated.

Windows

One of the things that people love about period properties is the different types of windows.  These can range from single-pane windows to sash windows to bay windows. Depending on the period, there may also be stained glass within the windows. To keep the period sensitivity when modifying your period property, it’s important to assess what you want the outside to look like. Therefore many people choose to sensitively replace the windows that are already there. There are also options for you to have stained glass windows color matched into more efficient windows, or to use those paynes elsewhere in your property. For windows such as bay windows, it may be that you need to replace the structure around the window so looking for companies who offer bay window replacement will help you do this. Some localities have regulations when you are looking to upgrade your properties and depending on the type of listing depends on how much you can and can’t change in the house. Unfortunately in bygone eras, they didn’t know that development in technologies would mean that you can make the house more energy-efficient and safer. This may scupper plans to make your home more efficient and modern, which is why you have to check the legal papers if you want to make any upgrades to your home.

Fireplaces

A lot of period properties contain stunning fireplaces with ornate tiles around them. Unfortunately, at the turn of the century, many of these were covered up or removed to fit the aesthetic trends at the time. Being able to replace and restore these wonderful additions to your home reintroduces the character to the property. You may be able to find original fireplaces at antique or scrap yards. These are joyous places to visit if you are looking to reintroduce the character to your property. Thankfully the people who own these types of places adore period features and will have kept them in relatively good condition. Depending on the type of fireplace you want depends on the price you have to pay to have it restored or reimplemented into the house.

Before you rush to reinstall a fireplace, you need to decide whether you want to use it like a fireplace or use it as decoration. If you want to use a fireplace as a fireplace within your period property, you need to assess the structure of the chimney. This can be a costly process if there is deterioration in the chimney structure, you can get around this by installing a steel chimney into the original chimney structure, but it needs professional assessment first. Some people are able to get away with just having a good chimney sweep as a clear-out of any debris that has appeared over time. A good practice is to install a cover over the top of your chimney to prevent any birds from getting inside and creating a nest. These can just be a form of metal netting or chicken wire attached securely around your chimney. This cost-effective method will prevent you from having any unwanted creatures in your chimney.

Tiles

Tiles within the period property are what draws lovers of period features to a property. Some love the colors and detail that are implemented in the tiles, however, some people detest the colors used! Regardless of your opinion maintaining tiled areas will add character and monetary value to your home. Traditional period tile colors are red black and white, if these do not fit with your color scheme, then absolutely acceptable to remove. However, caution would be paid to have a sensitivity to the pattern with whatever flooring you choose is highly desirable. Many people are choosing to replace colored tiles with a monochrome pattern which is not only chic but it may mimic what was there before. You may also choose to implement tiles around your fireplace as a carpet protector or to be sympathetic to what was there before. Again you can find original tiles usually at scrap or antique yards, but you may want to add your interests to the tiles so they fit your decor.

There are many tips across the internet to help you restore the decoration of your period property these are just a few.
