How To Take Your Utilities Off-Grid

Fed up with high utility bills? Going off-grid could allow you to save money in the long run by never having to pay a utility bill again. Instead, you can supply your own utilities. Going off-grid does require a fairly hefty investment upfront and is better suited for those with lots of available land. In other words, it’s not achievable for everyone. However, for those who can achieve it, it’s well worth it for the reduced future costs. Below are just a few ways to take your utilities off-grid.

Water

There are a few ways to harvest your own water. The most popular solution is to dig a well. By digging below the water table, you can then pump up water from the earth to use in your home. Well-water filtration systems can then make this water drinkable.

You can build a well in your backyard or even your basement. Wells are not possible for homes located at a higher altitude due to the sheer amount of digging necessary – if you get enough rainfall, a rainwater collecting system may be a better solution.

Sewage

Being able to harvest water is all well and good, but how should you deal with your wastewater? There are a few options, however the most popular is to use a septic tank.

Septic tanks are located underground and work by naturally breaking down waste. While septic pumping is occasionally needed, these systems are designed to work without too much intervention, making them very convenient.

It’s worth noting that not all wastewater has to go directly into the septic tank. Greywater recycling systems can take wastewater from sinks and showers and reuse it for processes like gardening and toilet flushing. This can help you to consume less water so that you don’t have to harvest quite as much.

Electricity

There are a few ways to harvest electricity, but one of the most reliable off-grid options is to use solar panels. With enough solar panels, you can harvest enough electricity from the sun to power your entire home. These are typically placed on the roofs of homes, but they can be installed anywhere on a property.

Those living in windy areas could also consider taking advantage of wind power with a home turbine. Home hydroelectric generators are also possible for those living near rivers.

Heating

If you already have an electric HVAC system, you can power this using solar panels or one of the electricity generation solutions discussed above. If your heating currently runs off gas or oil, you could consider exploring other options.

Ordering your own bottles of gas or oil to use is an option, but it’s a lot of hassle and potentially just as expensive as using a mains supplier. A solution that has become more popular for its efficiency and added greeness is using a biomass boiler. This can provide heat by burning wood pellets or other biomass resources, which are typically cheaper than oil or gas.
