How to Secure Your Home After a Break-In

Having your home broken into can be pretty scary. You can feel violated because someone has come into your space without permission. Afterward, you might feel less secure in your home and perhaps even scared that the burglars will come back. Securing your home after a break-in is important, especially if there are any broken locks, windows, or doors that could leave your home vulnerable. There are several steps you can take to make your home more secure, including things you can do right away and what you might choose to do over the coming weeks. There’s no need to move out; just improve your home security.

Lock Up

One of the first things you should do after a break-in, after reporting it, is to make sure your home is locked up. Did the intruders get in through an open window or door? Have any locks been left unlocked? Spend some time walking around your home and ensuring everything is closed and locked. As well as checking the main windows and doors, don’t forget to check any outbuildings. You can also take a look at any secure areas in your home, such as any safes you have, to make sure they are locked securely too.

Secure Your Windows

Intruders often use windows to get inside because people forget to close and lock them in the same way as their doors. Some will even break windows to get inside, leaving you with broken glass or a broken lock to deal with. If you need a new window, you can quickly arrange for a service such as  Renewal by Andersen window replacement to get the job done for you. Even if you’re not planning on replacing any windows, it’s a good idea to check around the frames and locks to ensure it’s all secure.

Replace Broken Locks

When locks have been broken, they need to be replaced as soon as possible. If you don’t fix them, they’re going to leave your home vulnerable to further break-ins. A broken lock might not always be easy to spot right away. It could be that the lock isn’t catching properly, but you haven’t noticed it. Carefully check all of your locks, even if there’s no visible damage. You might also consider replacing locks even if they’re functioning if you think that the burglars might have taken your keys. If you’re not sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Install Security Tech

Home security technology can be really helpful if you want to make your home more secure. Cameras, alarms and other tech will allow you to keep a closer eye on your home and prevent any break-ins in the future. A smart security system will give you the tools to closely monitor your home. Using motion sensors, you can get an alert if any activity is detected. Security lighting is also worth installing to improve the security of your home.

Don’t hesitate to improve your home security after a break-in. It’s better to be cautious and prevent any further problems.
