How to Reverse Sun-Damaged Skin

Sun damage to the skin is one of the most common skin problems because the sun is pretty much unavoidable. The rays penetrate through different opacities to reach your skin, and if you’re not well protected, you might develop skin conditions, including skin cancer.

In fact, research reveals that about 80% of skin aging is due to exposure to the harmful component of the sun. The ultraviolet rays in the sunlight are responsible for this damage. Even though it is relaxing to lounge in the sun, it might not be the best idea for your skin health. Prevention is better than cure, but once the damage occurs, you can still turn it around.

Symptoms of Sun Damage

  • Wrinkles: This is known to be one of the common signs of sun damage. The UV rays destroy the fibers responsible for the skin’s firmness. This adds a few sags and droops in your skin, adding several years to your age.
  • Sunburns: Definitely, if your skin is exposed to the sun for a while, you’re at risk of sunburn. This is where your skin reddens and becomes quite painful. In some cases there’s itching, and the skin may peel off, and it’s very bad, blisters will form.
  • Dry Skin: The heat from the sun can dry out the skin and leave it with rough patches. The dry patches can leave your skin looking and feeling like lizard skin.

Reversing the Damage

One of the first initiatives you can take about sun damage is to prevent further destruction. This means getting the best cream for sun damaged skin. There are some ingredients to look out for in the creams to be sure you are getting adequate protection.

They include retinoids, which are great for building collagen in the skin to bring back firmness. The compound comes from Vitamin A and is known for its skin repair properties, including fighting fine lines and evening out the skin tone.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) also creates a barrier between the skin and the UV rays from the sun. It is the measurement of how long a sunscreen will protect the wearer from the sun. Usually, the higher the number, the better protection you have.

A moisturizer will also go a long way in repairing and restoring dry skin. Drinking a lot of water will also make it easier to get rid of dry skin.

Products with antioxidant properties also come in handy is restoring flexibility in the skin.

Products with exfoliating properties also help with getting rid of dead, dry skin to reveal new, fresh youthful skin.

If ever you feel the damage is overwhelming, then you might want to see a dermatologist. They will prescribe solutions to the problem, depending on your skin type and the severity.

There’s nothing fun about sun-damaged skin, and if you want beautiful skin for longer, then you’ll have to pay attention. An effective skincare routine should help you get your skin back to a youthful stage in a while.
