How to Prevent Storm Damage On Your Home

The last few years have thrown some big weather incidents at people worldwide. And one thing is, you can never tell what will happen and when. While you cannot protect against every type of weather, and even with protection in place, things can still happen, putting as many preventative measures as possible is a good idea.

For storm damage, having many smaller preventative measures that you keep well-maintained is the key.

Generator

One of the risks with bad weather and storms is that the power from your home might get knocked out for a while. A generator that is available to use and kept in good condition can ensure that you have power when you need it the most.

Highlight hazards

In bad storms, visibility is low, and you might be surprised how many hazards you have around your home. It’s not just about hazards that you could trip up on, though; everything that is not secured has the potential to become a projectile. That projectile can cause catastrophic damage to windows, the building, and people.

Sealing

When the wind and rain start raging, it doesn’t take much for the wind to push its way into your home and take plenty of rain with it. If you don’t get storms often, you might forget about the sealant. However, it is vital that you check all of the windows and doors of the property. A small opening could allow enough wind in to cause the window to break.

Roof

The roof of your home is going to be your first line of defense but will likely get some damage in the process. Before storms are even mentioned, it is a good idea to have a roofing professional come out to make any necessary preparations for your roof. And make sure that you have the number for storm damage roofing professionals to inspect and repair it after.

You won’t be aware of loose shingles or damage unless you have an inspection at regular intervals.

Gutters

Gutters are essential even with the smallest amount of rain; however, having them free-flowing in extreme storms is a must. Gutters can snap, break and overflow quickly in a storm, meaning all debris can cause damage as it heads toward the floor.

Fencing

Any loose panels are a projectile risk, and even the smallest amount of give is too much. Fencing can easily come loose in a storm, so reinforcing the fence is a must.

Trees

For most of the year, seeing tree branches sway gently in the wind is lovely, but those same branches turn into a risk when the storms come. Keeping your trees well-trimmed will reduce the chance of a branch snapping and damaging your car or your home.

Potted plants

While potted plants look great and add a lot of personality to your garden, they can become very dangerous in the event of a storm. If you are aware of storms in advance, you can store them away – but it can be easier not to have them if you live where it often storms.
