Crucial Checks To Carry Out In A New Home

Crucial Checks To Carry Out In A New Home

You finally bought a new home; now what? It’s always advisable to carry out some essential checks before moving in. These internal inspections are quite different from the structural checks that are conducted before you make your purchase. It is crucial to be thorough with all types of checks because 86% of home buyers who used inspectors found at least one problem. If you skipped any part of this process by chance, it’s never too late to start. Here are three important checks that you can make immediately.

1. Water connections and the entire plumbing system

Many US homes outside New York were built between 1974 and 1979. This means the average age of a US house is 45 years. On the other hand, the average age of a New York house is 63 years. The purpose of this background is to give you an idea of how old the home’s plumbing system may be if the structure is over two decades old. An aging plumbing system can make your new home a bad buy. And you may have to spend a fortune on plumbing repairs.

Apart from the purely technical angle of checking the plumbing system, it is advisable to know a bit more about your water connections. For instance, can you identify the stopcock for the new home? Secondly, do you know where to locate the home’s central water connections? In the unlikely event of a burst pipe, would you know how to stop the flow? These are important questions that draw your attention to learning about the water connections in the house.

2. Electricity

This basic amenity cannot be overlooked in a new home. While this is a purely specialized area, there are things to look out for before the electrician comes in. You will first need an outlet tester. The colors displayed on this tool when you use it will inform whether the wiring in your home is properly done. If not, you will require a qualified electrician to correct any anomalies. It is advisable to learn more about finding the right electrical company for this job to ensure the right thing is done.

In addition to the above, remember to check for unusually dark or brown discolorations around the fuse box or electricity board. If there is a circuit breaker, it would be vital to know where it is located. In those first few days, your main concern may not have to be about saving power. On the contrary, it is advisable to turn all the lights, fans, and electrical systems on to test run each one. This is the only way to confirm or rule out any problems with the electricity in the new house.

3. Pest control

Statistics show that 84% of homeowners have experienced at least one pest incident in the past year. This, therefore, makes pest control an essential checklist activity to conduct in a new home. It would be advisable not to overlook or ignore this because pests are excellent at obscuring their habitats. For example, termites and roaches may live deep within your structures, and you may not notice until the damage caused is extensive. It is therefore advisable to call in exterminators to fumigate at least once before moving into your new home.
