Our bedrooms should be a sanctuary. A place we can relax when we want some quiet, somewhere to rest and recuperate and sometimes a space of intimacy. However, what may have started out as a bedroom for one in our house or apartment, may have organically grown into a couple’s room. This means twice the clothing and twice the mess!
If you have recently moved in with your partner, it may be time to give your bedroom a little overhaul and create more room. This is an excellent way of marking your new relationship and will make it feel like you are starting a new adventure together.
Sit down with your partner and talk about what you both need from a bedroom. Start with the basics, color, and style. You should focus on light shades to help the space feel roomier. Then move onto how much room you both need. Make sure you are both happy before you make any changes. Listen to your partner for any ideas they may have about furnishings, lighting, and entertainment.
Built-in closets can really help maximize the space you have in a room and are a great way of keeping clothing and clutter away. Speak to a specialist and talk through the feel of your room. One of the top questions designers are asked is ‘what are custom closets made of?’ as this can help form the rest of your room furniture. You will probably be able to choose a number of finishes which could save you money, replacing your bed and other items you already have.
If you do want to replace your bed, why not consider a storage bed. It is the perfect place to store bed linen or shoes. If your budget is limited, then look at modular boxes you could slide under your current bed.
Replacing heavy drapes with shutters or blinds can add a little more space to your room too. Adding mirrors might not give you any extra areas, but it will give the feel of a more open space, which can make things feel a little less cramped in smaller bedrooms.
When it comes to lighting and entertainment features you could find yourself disagreeing, people use bedrooms in different ways. It’s essential to ensure you are both happy, so if one of you wants a TV in the room and the other doesn’t like the idea, you could compromise by choosing a TV Bed frame. This allows you to hide the television during the day, so you can almost forget it is there, and it will keep you both happy. Plus, who doesn’t like the occasionally cozy night in bed, watching a film?
It’s also important to consider adding more electrical sockets in your room, one each side of the bed. With the technology we use today, installing a USB point gives you more options.
Then all that is left to do is settle down to your first night’s sleep in your new room together.
